For safety , Mount Auburn will use a lowering device at the grave . This device ensures a gentle lowering into the grave . It is a quiet , mechanical device that lowers a body using canvas straps , which may also be buried with the body ( typically , they are removed by Mount Auburn ’ s interment crew after the body has been lowered ). Mount Auburn allows a family member or a friend to turn the handle that begins the lowering process .
Please see the Planning Ahead section for more information about the use of our lowering device with shrouded bodies .
Families may place single stem flowers in the grave after the body has been lowered . In keeping with our floral tribute policies , any flower arrangements left on top of the grave , once it has been filled , will be removed on the fifth day after burial .
If requested , soil , shovels and spades will be provided , allowing the family and friends to place soil over the casket or shroud . Mount Auburn ’ s interment crew typically closes the grave using mechanical equipment that can reach the grave site after the family leaves .
