Getting Organized
In A Different World
By Kym Grabman -
With so many of us spending a significant time at home,
I think it is time to check the cleaning of many forgotten and
well-used items. I mention it below, but PLEASE refer to your
manufacturer’s recommended cleanings. Not doing so may
negate a warranty should you ever need it in the future.
Let’s start in the kitchen. It’s time to empty the crumb tray and
clean your toaster. Have you cleaned your coffee pot lately?
A nice vinegar rinse will help. If you have a Keurig, cleaning out
the needles might be in order. This is something you can do
by watching a YouTube video on it. They provide excellent
instructions. If your cookie trays, casserole dishes and fry pans
are showing an excess of discoloration, you can use a magic
eraser, baking soda and dish soap to work off those brown oil
spots that can accumulate with time. Some good old elbow
grease can make them shine like new!
Make sure to give under your microwave a good degreasing if
it’s above your stove. Check the ice/water dispenser tray in
your fridge. Does it have a white mineral deposit buildup? Pull
it out and soak it in some vinegar. What is the status of your
fridge water filter? It could be time for a replacement. When
was the last time you cleaned your garbage can? I know, this
can be decidedly unpleasant, but necessary all the same! How
about your garbage disposal? I throw some ice cubes and
bleach down mine every so often. Give the sink drains and the
area around the top of your sink where it attaches to the
counter an extra good clean with a toothbrush and your sink
cleaner. These areas lack attention many times.
Have you checked your fire alarms or your CO2 alarms lately?
Make sure they are in proper working order and the batteries
are up to date. Any battery operated clocks in your home?
Check to make sure they are keeping time. It may be time to
update the battery if you cannot remember when this was last
done.
Moving on, how long has it been since you last changed your
HVAC filter? It could also be time to pour vinegar down the
drain to ensure mold or mildew build up is not accumulating.
You should do this monthly with your filter change. (To keep
track, I write on the wall next to the unit in a pencil the date of
each time I do this.) Check your vent covers and exhaust fans
around the house. Do you see an accumulation of dust? If so,
it is time to wipe those areas clean. Do you have a fireplace in
your home? Is there required maintenance for it?
How long since you cleaned your printer or the surfaces of
your computer? Please follow appropriate directions provided
by the manufacturer as their recommendations can vary.
Pay special attention to your computer screen and remember,
glass cleaners are typically not recommended for their
cleaning. It is the same thing for your TVs in the home;
time to remove that layer of dust clinging to the
surface along with any other DVD players, games or
various attached devices. How are the batteries in your
device remotes?
Have you cleaned your washing machine lately? I run
my towels at night on a 3 hour deep clean steam cycle
with bleach regularly, so that doubles as an interior
clean. Once in a while I do run a full clean cycle
according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
For a front loaded washer, there is typically a trap at
the bottom of the machine that needs to be emptied.
For a top loaded washer, clean out the areas around
the lid. Lots of dirt and grime accumulate in the
recesses. Remove your lint catcher in the dryer.
Wipe it down and give inside a good vacuum out while
you are at it. Remember, whenever you maintenance
your items, be sure to unplug them first. Speaking of
vacuums… have you cleaned it out lately? Many have
filters that need washing or replacing. Cut out all of the hair
and items that inevitably wind their way around the cleaning
brush underneath. Wipe out the dirt canister.
Last but not least, here are a few random items to consider…
Have you cleaned your flat iron, curling iron or your hair dryer
vent screen? It’s amazing how much can accumulate on those
tools! Check your garage door. Is there a black mark down the
middle of the outside? This is an indicator that it is time for a
tune up. Also, walk your house and look for light bulbs that are
out. All of these small items will add up to make a difference
in your daily routine and hopefully, in the longevity of your
items.
