- WHAT’S HAPPENING -
IN EDUCATION?
An Update From
Our Osceola County
School Board Member
By Teresa "Terry" Castillo -
On June 30th, the school board unanimously voted to adopt the
school reopening plan for this fall. Based on extensive conversations
with community members, evidence-based research,
and state guidance, the School District of Osceola will start the
fall semester with three flexible options for our community.
1. Face-to-face instruction at schools with comprehensive
health and safety precautions in place
2. Digital learning with their assigned school following a
traditional school day schedule for instruction
3.Virtual learning for students in Grades K-12 with Osceola
Virtual School, which allows learning during non-traditional
school hours
Since a successful school year will depend on careful planning,
we are asking that all parents and caretakers go to the district
website at www.osceolaschools.net/startsmart to select their
preferred option for the upcoming school year. While this was a
difficult decision to make, I tried to vote for the option that is
best for Osceola County students, first. I thought extensively
about parents and caretakers who will need to go back to work
to provide for their families. I also thought about our teachers,
who most of all want to get back to doing what they do best,
educate our students.
Because we will be navigating uncharted waters starting on
August 10, I am asking for your cooperation in guiding our
students to safe health practices. The safety of the entire
community is predicated on the use of social distancing, the
effective wearing of masks, and the constant washing of hands.
Please help us by communicating these safety measures to your
children, especially if they will be attending face to face
instruction.
It is important that our community understands that there are
no easy options in this new world we live in. However, our plan
is flexible. It allows parents and caretakers to make the best
choice for their family while allowing for change. We are still
monitoring Covid-19 cases. If there is any indication that our
students would be safer with different options, we will change
course immediately. I am committed to the safety of our
students first. As always, please reach out to me with any
questions or concerns. I have enjoyed our communications.
I am always available for a chat at 407-577-5022.
