Celebrating Poundbury
Every member of the community has a part to play to help make the world we live in a better place . Sometimes , action is needed to change the way we are living our lives . From its inception Poundbury has always been trailblazing , including the radical new way of building a community as championed by HRH The Prince of Wales in the 80s . Now , as a community I hope we can get together and be part of a solution . That ’ s why I am passionate about a new scheme to make Poundbury free of single-use plastic waste . It follows the work of an incredible team of children at Damers First School and their inspiring teacher Edd Moore , who in the space of nine months have made their school plastic free . They now want their good work to expand to the whole of Poundbury , then Dorchester and hopefully in the future , the rest of Dorset . Part of their campaign is the introduction of a reCup scheme to limit the amount of disposable tea and coffee cups we throw away each month . And this couldn ’ t come any sooner . A recent World Health Association report found that there will be a 33 % rise in the number of plastic coffee cups used in the UK by 2030 without action to curb their use . The inspiring Eco Crew have already set up a Refill scheme in Poundury where they asked businesses to sign up and allow people to refill their water bottles instead of buying new ones . This year , please join us in celebrating their extraordinary work and get onboard with this new project . You can read all about the scheme and how you can get involved on page 49 .
