LIVING AT YARLINGTON’S MELROSE COURT
Shared owner June explains why she chose to call Melrose Court home
Yarlington Housing Group’s Melrose Court is
a luxury, modern extra care scheme designed
to support the over 55s retain their freedom
and independence.
Made up of 63 self-contained one and two
bedroom apartments and the reassurance of
flexible, tailor-made support packages 24/7,
Melrose Court prides itself in supporting you
to live in your home, not in a care home.
Apartments at Melrose Court can be
purchased through shared ownership or
through affordable rent with additional
services such as care packages, meals and
domestic support for a small fee.
New Melrose Court resident June was born
and brought up in Dorchester before moving
across the country with her family. Now on
her own, June decided to return to her roots
where she watched Poundbury “rise from her
old stomping grounds”.
Given her circumstances and desire to
return to being a homeowner, June’s
daughters recommended the option of
shared ownership, providing June with
the opportunity to own her home with the
addition of support and a community at an
affordable price.

At first, June was reluctant: “I am
independent, stubborn and like living on
my own so I didn’t like the idea of a care
home. But the friendly and helpful staff at
Melrose Court assured me that I could be as
independent as I wanted.”
Living in her fully fitted apartment, June
began to realise that she would continue to
have the freedom she was used to, in her
own home, not in a care home. “The staff are
lovely, they respect my independence but
discreetly check that I have no problems and
are happy,” says June.
She added: “My idea of a care home has
changed. I have a warm and spacious second
floor flat with a lovely view of the field. I also
have my independence; I can choose whether
to socialise with other residents or stay in my
flat reading and watching the world go by.”
Melrose Court includes a large dining room
where residents can chat over a meal, a
spacious lounge full of games and an IT suite
and library. The scheme also includes a guest
suite, meaning her family can visit and
stay anytime.
Melrose Court’s additional services
(including care, meal plans and support
with domestic chores such as cleaning and
shopping) also provide options for residents
to continue to remain independent as and
when their needs change.
June added: “Coming here is one of the best
decisions I have ever made. I am warm, safe
and secure. I thoroughly recommend Melrose
to anyone who needs care or has the same
sort of doubts I had.”
Shared ownership allows you to purchase a
share of a property at a percentage that you
can afford. Percentages range from 45% and
rent on the remaining share to 75% share
with no rent.

of the most important public spaces at Poundbury. I wanted to
create a building that had elegance and dignity but used restrained
architectural detail."
