Celebrating Poundbury
E
very member of the community has a part to play to help
make the world we live in a better place. Sometimes, action
is needed to change the way we are living our lives. From
its inception Poundbury has always been trailblazing,
including the radical new way of building a community
as championed by HRH The Prince of Wales in the 80s.
Now, as a community I hope we can get together and be part of a
solution. That’s why I am passionate about a new scheme to make
Poundbury free of single-use plastic waste.
It follows the work of an incredible team of children at Damers First
School and their inspiring teacher Edd Moore, who in the space of nine
months have made their school plastic free.
They now want their good work to expand to the whole of Poundbury,
then Dorchester and hopefully in the future, the rest of Dorset.
Part of their campaign is the introduction of a reCup scheme to limit the
amount of disposable tea and coffee cups we throw away each month. And
this couldn’t come any sooner. A recent World Health Association report
found that there will be a 33% rise in the number of plastic coffee cups
used in the UK by 2030 without action to curb their use.
The inspiring Eco Crew have already set up a Refill scheme in Poundury
where they asked businesses to sign up and allow people to refill their
water bottles instead of buying new ones.
This year, please join us in celebrating their extraordinary work and get
onboard with this new project. You can read all about the scheme and how
you can get involved on page 49.
