GOING BACK TO
THE FUTURE
The short courses have proved popular
Modern technology is evolving at a rapid
rate, but there’s now a growing resurgence
in learning skills from the past. We delve
into the many interesting and often
unexpected courses on offer in Poundbury.
W
hile you can certainly get creative with your
iPad or PC, there’s a certain satisfaction you
can only get from actually getting hands on
with your own artistic masterpiece.
Whether it’s a life drawing, a stone carving
or learning an ancient technique, it is important to try your hand at
these art forms and discover something new along the way.
Perhaps that’s why just two years after opening, Dorset Centre for
Creative Arts has quietly gained the attention it deserves.
Opened in November 2015, the arts centre – owned and operated
by Weymouth College – offers short courses for a range of people
wanting to take an art course.
The list of courses is endless and includes basketry, calligraphy and
woodcarving, as well as more traditional art courses, but be sure to
book quickly.
Director of the centre Sarah Drew explains that there has been a real
effort to offer a range of courses with a spotlight on ancient skills.
“We decided to offer a really broad spectrum of courses and
therefore we have a real mix of ages ranging from 15 to 88,” she said.
“When we opened we wanted to do something very different so we
sourced industry professionals, practitioners in wonderful crafts such
as Viking jewellery and bronze casting.”
The list of courses is changing all the time and Sarah is inviting the
community to get in touch with ideas for courses or practitioners to
come forward if they have a skill to teach.
Some of the courses are for an evening, and others, such as paper
cutting, pottery or life drawing are for a series of six or 10 weeks.
The latest courses include millinery and the chance to come and
Industry professionals teach a varied selection of skills
learn how to shape and mould millinery felt over traditional wooden
hat blocks to create your very own cloche hat.
Or how about hand building creatures from clay? Using hand
building techniques that cover surface decoration and facial features,
the students will be able to create their own creature giving it
personality and character.
