ARTS POUNDBURY: A NEW PERSPECTIVE The architecture of Poundbury has attracted plenty of attention, but there is a new perspective in the drawings of Rowan Barnes-Murphy, which go on show in an exhibition starting on 11 November. R Zak (centre) with staff from Vans Bournemouth ZAK TAKES ART WORLD IN HIS STRIDE Talented young Poundbury artist Zak Trevett has recently collaborated with fashion brand, Vans. Celebrating Poundbury first met Zak back in 2015 and has been closely following this rising star. T he 16-year old has earned international acclaim appearing in Rolling Stone magazine and been described as a ‘world class artist’ by his idol the Californian artist for Santa Cruz Skateboards Jim Phillips. In fact, Jim has personally mentored Zak for the last seven years adding: “He is an outstanding young artist, whose work I believe will become iconic before long.” Zak’s artwork can now be seen at Vans Bournemouth, where he has several unique trainer designs currently on show at the store. Greg Moors, manager of Vans Bournemouth, says: “We first met Zak when he came in to the shop with his Dad several years ago and got chatting. We’ve had an annual art event in the store for the last five years and it was a natural thought to invite Zak.” Last year Vans Bournemouth threw down the gauntlet to local artists to put their designs on a giant size 66 Vans trainer. “He was 15 at the time and completely different from the other artists who had a background of tattoo artistry, graphic design and illustration. Zak is incredibly focused and blew us away with his design,” adds Greg. After the exhibition Zak caught the attention of fashion brand Animal, which is based in Poole. After a spell of work experience there, some of Zak’s work is believed to be going into production. This summer has seen Zak design another exclusive trainer for Vans Bournemouth that is currently on show. Greg says: “Zak’s shoe is by our till point with customers often gobsmacked at the quality of the design. 70 WWW.CELEBRATINGPOUNDBURY.CO.UK owan is an artist whose work many people may have seen, though they will probably not know his name. During a successful career as an illustrator he has produced iconic work for (among others) the Royal Shakespeare Company, the BBC, The Savoy Hotel and Moet & Chandon. His drawings feature in leading newspapers and magazines all over the world, and he has created characters for books from major publishing houses. In 2017 he has been spending time in Poundbury, working on drawings of its distinctive buildings - including, of course, the landmarks of Strathmore House and the Duchess of Cornwall Inn at Queen Mother Square. He said: “We lived in Poundbury many years ago, when it was seen as a quiet, experimental village. Returning to Poundbury, after having been away for a while, has proved an eye-opener. “It has changed beyond recognition, not only in size, but it has developed into a much busier place where it is clear people enjoy living and working. The gardens, parks and courtyards have matured, and each phase has its interesting characteristics” Rowan’s pictures can be seen at Gallery On The Square, Queen Mother Square, Poundbury, from Saturday November 11, in an exhibition which also includes his distinctive limited edition prints of birds and animals. The exhibition will run from November until the new year 2018. Zak is a natural talent and we’ve even seen new skills such as airbrushing being used,” he says. Curated by arts organisation Artwey, the exhibition sees a different pair of talented artists each month. I Weymouth Beach by Olivia Nurrish t will showcase the work of established Dorset painters, so there is something for all to see while you tuck into lunch or tea. The monthly exhibition follows on from Artwey’s successful Art Trail that incorporated six venues in Poundbury earlier this year. Artwey Directors, Olivia Nurrish and Carol Cruickshank, say: “We were absolutely delighted with the response and support that we received from both artists and venues when we did the Art Trail here. Now we are really looking forward to returning and contributing to the cultural life of Poundbury.” Autumn will see work from Liz Bowers and Pat Beeson. The rest of the year is shaping up like this with exhibits from Di Pattinson and Olivia Nurrish in November, and December has top art on display from Cathy Warne and Betty Hoddinott. Betty is one of the founder members of Poundbury Art, a friendly painting group of mixed ability, which now meets in Martinstown Village Hall.
