COMMUNITY
DORCHESTER
SOCIAL
STROKE CLUB
For the last 10 years, the Dorchester Social Stroke
Club has provided an amazing service as a social
club for people who have suffered a stroke.
T
he club organises activities that aim to restore confidence,
which may have been shattered by the illness, and also aims
to assist in social and speech rehabilitation.
The club provides a stimulating environment where all
members receive physical and mental exercise including
interaction with others.
They meet every Thursday in the Magna Housing Residents Hall
in Lubbecke Way, Dorchester. The organisation was started by Jackie
Sherfield in September 2007, who has a deep knowledge and experience
of the devastating effects of stroke.
Jackie says: “There is no doubt that a stroke is life changing for the
survivors and carers - but it certainly isn’t game over, unless you let it be.
I have been involved in half a dozen stroke clubs and speech groups and
the experience has been life enhancing. I have met inspired leaders, great
volunteers, dedicated professionals, devoted carers and, of course, brave
survivors - all working to beat the aftermath of stroke, while having a
good time together and supporting each other.”
Speaking at the recent 10th birthday celebrations, Jackie adds: “Our
primary role is to give support to stroke survivors and their families.
We have chosen to do this in a social environment, but there is a very
serious side to our purpose.”
