North East Quadrant
The North East Quadrant celebrates Dorset women and commemorate famous battles and actions by The Dorset Regiment .
W
ith the building work in the Northern Quadrant continuing apace , eagleeyed readers may have noticed that many of the roads have been named after famous Dorset women and locations in the county . This reflects and celebrates the fact that Poundbury has a high-number of female owners of independent businesses . Celebrating Poundbury took a trip to the library and did some research on these female pioneers and trailblazers from throughout history that provided the inspiration for the new road names . Architect Ben Pentreath , who designed much of The North East Quadrant alongside George Saumarez-Smith , said : " We ’ ve reached the point in the development of Poundbury where we have run out of Duchy farm names – which had previously provided the inspiration for the naming of many of the streets in Poundbury . " Turning attention to people is a good way to bring history and the present fullcircle . George Samaurez Smith and I enjoyed thinking about the nature of the people and the places when creating the network of streets , lanes and mews ”. Of the names chosen here are a few highlights .
ELEANOR COADE : She was the inventor of the famous Coade Stone widely used in the 18th century building world . Mrs Coade lived at Belmont in Lyme Regis now owned by the Landmark Trust .
ST WALBURGA ’ S COURT AND ST WALBURGA ’ S MEWS : Named after Saint Walburga who was educated by the nuns of Wimborne Abbey , Dorset , where she spent 26 years as a member of the community . She then travelled as a missionary in Europe in the 700s AD .
KOHIMA SQUARE : One of the Dorset Regiments most famous battle honours ( Far East WW2 ).
SARAH SANDS : The Dorsets sailed this troop ship to India despite it being crippled by fire mid ocean .
