The Buttermarket Welcome to the heart of the South West Quadrant T he Buttermarket is surrounded by boutique shops, businesses and cafés and comes alive during the day. You may have also seen it on TV earlier this year when it was immortalised on film, when it was used as the location for the Channel Four TV drama, Electric Dreams. The focal point is the iconic Buttercross building, which houses the independent coffee shop Finca that specialises in its own roasted blends and baked favourites. Recently opened, the coffee house is a relaxing place to wile away some time enjoying the mouth-watering cakes, savouries and specialist coffee. At the other end of the Buttermarket is the iconic Maiden House to the south. This is home to the recently opened Hansson Health (who treat pain with advanced chiropractic techniques) and the antique shop Romans VIII. Just up from there the recently opened Amber Hardware sits next to popular traditional shop Boo’s Toy Shop. There is a selection of diverse businesses that flank the sides of the Buttermarket. These range from window and door specialists, Capelli Hairdressing salon and Allure beauty salon. While other recent additions in the last few years include a Post Office within the Buttermarket Stores, the Bramble Café and Deli, run by Mat Follas, Poundbury Pilates and Wessex ECOEnergy. Traditional shop Boo’s Toy Shop organises great community events such as the annual Easter Egg hunt and the Santa’s Grotto. The Christmas Light switch on will take place on Friday 24 November. This year it will be bigger than ever with both The Prince of Wales School and Damers First School singing carols. The evening will also feature mulled wine from Brace of Butchers and a barbeque. The next day on Saturday 25 November will be a festive Christmas Market with craft activities and Santa’s grotto.
