FOOD & DRINK BUTTERMARKET PUMMERY SQUARE If you are after a leisurely breakfast or lunch, the Butter Market Bakery in the Buttermarket is one of the best places to go. Now under new management, the artisan bakery offers freshly baked bread, cakes and delicious soups and pizzas at lunchtime with its diners sat on long wooden feasting benches. The iconic Buttercross building draws from 18th Century design used for the Town Hall in Bridport. A few doors down is Bramble Café and Deli – owned by Masterchef winner Mat Follas. He sources his food locally and has an impressive range of products and teas. Located just outside of Poundbury is the Brewers Arms in the village of Martinstown, which is a fantastic country pub with an excellent selection of food specials. We’d recommend following the public footpath via Middle Farm Way to Martinstown and stopping in at the pub. In the oldest quarter of Poundbury you’ll find a charming square featuring a good old-fashioned family run pub, The Poet Laureate has an extensive menu and fresh décor inside. Try the cosy lounge area for lunch or dinner with friends. Opposite is Café Octagon that offers delicious freshly baked cakes, afternoon tea and lunches. It has peaceful outdoor seating tucked away in one of the winding side streets. POUNDBURY FARMERS’ MARKET On the first Saturday each month (from 9am until 1pm) foodies flock to Queen Mother Square to purchase the delicious offerings. From artisan bakeries to fresh crabs and seafood, it really is a display of Dorset’s finest produce. F ound in the heart of Buttermarket Square is the Bramble Café and Deli opened by former Masterchef winner Mat Follas and Amanda Follas in 2016. The café transforms into a restaurant for evening dining at weekends. Mat has very kindly shared with Celebrating Poundbury two fantastic recipes to recreate in your own kitchen: SMOKED MACKEREL AND HERB MAYONNAISE Easy mayonnaise: Forget dripping oil and whisking endlessly to make a mayonnaise ... you don't have to ... this takes 30 seconds! This has taken all the pain out of making mayonnaise for me ... use a stick blender. SERVES 4 BABENY WAY Ingredients: Herb of your choice, (parsley, dill or tarragon are all lovely with mackerel) finely chopped 1 egg
 Pinch salt
200ml rapeseed or sunflower or olive oil
 1 tsp white wine vinegar
1 tsp lemon juice 4 smoked mackerel fillets (Chesil Smokery in Bridport produce a fantastic smoked mackerel) The culinary scene in Poundbury continues unabated here, with the charming Bonjour Café on the corner. The café is run by passionate baker Emma Teasdale and has some fantastic homemade treats to sample. A short walk further and you’ll find the recently opened Italian restaurant Piccolo Fiore in Challacombe Square. This intimate little eaterie is dedicated to Italian cuisine with all the classic dishes and an ever-changing specials board. The restaurant also offers a takeaway service. Smoked Mackerel and Herb Mayonnaise Put the egg into a container just wider than your stick blender (I often use a large mug) then add 150-200ml oil, vinegar and lemon juice. Mix, holding the stick blender over the yolk on the bottom of the container for the first 10 seconds, then slowly drag the blender up the container until all of the oil is mixed in and a mayonnaise is formed. Method: To make the mayonnaise: Butter Market Bakery Olive oil packs a lot of flavour simply on its own. Because of this, I use mostly sunflower with a little olive oil for a nice balance or an extra virgin rapeseed oil that will produce a wonderful bright yellow nutty mayonnaise that brings the dish to life. The Poet Laureate You can then add other flavours; chopped wild garlic, dill or fennel fronds for fish, capers for shellfish. It’s worth noting that flavours intensify over a while, so be cautious with garlic, especially as it will get much stronger in flavour after an hour or so. This keeps fine for two days but it’s so easy, I usually make it fresh. Serve with the smoked mackerel and fresh salad leaves. “Food tastes better with excellent service” EVENTS COMING UP Thursday 20th April - War of the Rosés' DINHAM WALK Heading through the centre of Poundbury you will come across the Café on the Green in Dinham Walk.
