On the same day as the special visit by HRH The Queen, the Duchess of Cornwall Inn was also officially opened by the Duchess of Cornwall. Now six months on, the brand new venue is alive with customers and is already an ever-popular fixture for locals and visitors. The south side of the square was completed in 2011 and later that year Waitrose was officially opened by The Prince of Wales during one of his previous Royal visits. At the very core of the Queen Mother Square project is the Royal Pavilion, a residential block of 20 luxury apartments with plans for a spa and shop. Currently under construction with a completion date of February next year, the building's architecture and interior has been impressively designed by the Dorset and London based architect Ben Pentreath. Next to Royal Pavilion is the equally stunning Strathmore House that opened in April last year. Built by ZeroC and designed by the leading classical architects Quinlan & Francis Terry, Strathmore House has pride of place in Queen Mother Square. One of the recent architectural highlights of Queen Mother Square is Jubilee Hall, which incorporates rescued materials from Weymouth’s demolished Jubilee Hall. Another major construction is that of the 62 one and two bedroom assisted living apartments exclusively for the over 70s. Known as Bowes Lyon Court, the McCarthy & Stone development fronts Peverell Avenue West and is truly a showcase development for them, complete with an orangery and a library. There are also many popular businesses located in Queen Mother Square inlcusing Dorset Wines, Brace of Butchers and Waitrose. The original vision for the Square to be at the heart of Poundbury has finally started to come into fruition. WWW.CELEBRATINGPOUNDBURY.CO.UK 29
