Celebrating Our Past. Educating Our Future.
60 years. In that time, our country has had 11 presidents; the city of Dallas has more than doubled in size – growing from 400,000+ residents in the early 1950s to more than 1.2M today; and our primary source of information has evolved from a single radio in every home to a mobile, Internet-enabled device in every pocket.
The scope of the changes humanity has experienced in the past 60 years is extraordinary. Encompassing governments (think Germany and Russia), medicine (vaccines and transplants), travel (air), exploration (space), and technology (computer), those changes have touched all aspects of our lives.
Throughout this time – decades of peace, conflict, decline, renewal, heartbreaking tragedies and startling discoveries – the teachers at St. John’s Episcopal School have nurtured and educated children.
Born of St. John’s Episcopal Church’s desire to serve East Dallas families, the school's growth has paralleled the arc of human development: a Parish Day School until 1980; a hidden gem for the next 20 years; an emerging contender at the turn of the 21st century; and now, a recognized private school providing a modern education to 500 children.
Many have come and gone as the school has grown, leaving indelible marks on our collective consciousness; among them: Fr. McCrea, Fr. Maceo, Grace Cook. Like so many of their colleagues, their love for the school and dedication to the children influenced their actions as they worked to fulfill our mission.
At its core, St. John’s has always embraced the ideals of a modern school – one that does not ignore the past; but instead learns from history and builds upon it in responsive, forward-thinking ways, while remaining true to the school’s essence. Ultimately, a modern school focuses on ideas and people, their lives today, and what children need to thrive in the future.
In these pages, we celebrate our past – our history with the church, our participation in the East Dallas community, and our relationships with thousands of families who have helped shaped the school we have become. We also look ahead with joy and excitement as we imagine the possibilities and educate those who are our future.
Respectfully yours,
