My first contact with the Patients as Educators came from a visit to my GP . As a Keele University teaching practice I was asked if I would agree to be initially seen by a final year medical student . During this appointment we discussed my problem with the pain in my toes . This is caused by my Peripheral Neuropathy . She was very interested in the condition and I went through my medical history . During the discussion she mentioned the Patients as Educator scheme and gave me the details .
Ringing the contact number I joined the scheme , this was before Covid and the first two sessions were conducted at the Keele Medical School and in the North Staffs University Hospital medical library . This was face to face with 2nd year students who were allowed to poke and prod my legs with a pointed instrument conducting a nerve induction test . This was while other students asked me questions . This was an enjoyable experience talking to the students who mostly were full of enthusiasm .
