Some points to remember when planning your
ceremony:
• Whatever you do – don’t forget to give your
notices of intention! If you haven’t given notice,
then your ceremony cannot go ahead, no matter
how much time, effort and money you have
spent on all your preparations. Once you have set
the date and chosen the venue, get in touch with
your local Register Office, or designated Register
Office if applicable, to organise an appointment
to give notice of intention. Some London offices
are extremely busy and you may have to wait
several weeks for an appointment.
• You can book up to a year to the day: ensure that
you secure your date and time with both the
venue and the registration service. Our diary is
now available online so you can book or check
availability at any time of the day – or night!
• Ensure that you read our Terms and Conditions
carefully before you make your booking. For
information about fees, visit the registration
service fees page.

• Remember that the law does not permit the use
of any wording in a civil ceremony – including
vows, readings or music - which has religious
connections or connotations, or has been taken
from a religious service.
• You are responsible for ensuring that two
witnesses will be present at your ceremony or
registration.
• It is a legal requirement that the registrar must
meet with both of you to check the details on
your legal paperwork immediately prior to your
ceremony, so you must arrive in plenty of time. If
either of you are ‘fashionably late’, it will result in
the postponement of your ceremony.
• If you have any personal wishes regarding your
ceremony, please discuss your circumstances
with the Registration Service staff.
