ing them, you are also creating a level of accountability for each other’s success. Now you have 10
pairs of students all with mobile technology, but
what do you do next?
The device itself is a mobile computer
with access to the entirety of the internet. Ask
half the class to look up the Civil War battles that
took place in Pea Ridge, AR. Ask the other half
to research a battle from Roman times. Debrief
with differences and similarities. Allow them to
use their devices throughout the entire activity.
You can use this technique to research any topic
in any class.

Twitter is another great research tool.
Yes, I said research tool. By searching Twitter for
hashtags, you can find links to a wealth of information. However, you can also use Twitter as
an online discussion board. You can use Twitter
as an audience response system (first person to
tweet the correct answer). You can use Twitter to
write papers. (Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
can each be cited in MLA and APA formatting
now.)
Another extremely powerful tool in hijacking your students’ technology is the QR Code.
QR Codes can be generated for free using several online generator sites. QR Codes are a way
to connect our analog world of presentations,
paper, and books to the digital world. With QR
Codes, you can provide videos, you can link to
articles, or you can create surveys or quizzes
using Survey Monkey and push all these things
to their mobile devices just by having them scan
the codes.

Allow your students to be creative with
their mobile devices. When in history have you
had a class in which all people carry their e-mail,
camera, computer, video recorder, video player,
etc… with them everywhere they go?
for your dedication to
Teaching Excellence!

Hijacking students’ technology is not
about taking it away; it is about giving them
things to do using it. Refocus their attention not
off the technology but to your topics by using
the technology. Share your successes and discuss
best practices with each other. I am sure your
students will perk up and your engagement will
increase as they have fun learning from you.
