Professor Bronte Miller
from Patrick Henry Community College, Martinsville, Va.
“Cooperative Learning: Fundamentals of Active Learning”
This highly interactive workshop is designed to educate, inspire, & rejuvenate TCC
faculty across all curricula. This workshop
provides a conceptual framework & “handson” experience in planning & implementing
cooperative learning in the college classroom. Participants will gain insight into
structuring cooperative activities using the
key elements. Forming & troubleshooting
groups are addressed. In addition, the challenges of assessing or grading group work
are explored. Discipline-specific cooperative learning activities are described and
modeled. Participants will have an opportunity to develop cooperative learning activities which they can use in their courses
right away.
Bronte is returning to TCC as part of a Catalyst & Bill & Melinda Gates Grant. TCC faculty who have attended her workshops before rave about her ability to convey the concepts & practice of cooperative learning to the audience. Patrick Henry Community
College has demonstrated a 25% increase in 2 yr completion rates & a 26% increase in fall-to-fall retention rates, which college
administrators tie directly to cooperative learning.
