(Continued from page 7) course for the convenience and flexibility but, without support, may not persist to navigate the technology and provide themselves with a needed structure for learning. As the student does not see the instructor, it may be more difficult for a struggling student to reach out for help, particularly if the student is taking the class because he or she has scheduling constraints that limit the student’s ability to reach out for support during the hours that the instructor and the college service are available. While an online faculty member cannot create curriculum that will ensure the success of each student, a course designed with best practices may promote the success of more students. The Quality Matters in Oklahoma consortium is interested in helping faculty identify and implement best practices in the area of online course design. All consortium members are subscribers to Quality Matters. The Quality Matters Rubric is a list of 41 specific standards grouped under 8 general standards. These standards represent best practices in online course design that were identified through formal research. The Quality Matters in Oklahoma consortium is offering official QM Apply the Rubric workshops. This workshop introduces the QM Rubric and its standards. The Applying the Rubric workshop can be taken online or face-to-face. Workshops are offered all over the state including online workshops offered by TCC’s Distance Learning department and face-to-face workshops offered by The Eighth Floor. Any TCC employee (full-time, parttime, faculty, or staff) who has an interest may enroll in a workshop. The workshop calendar can be found on the “Quality Matters in The Rules are Changing Oklahoma” website listed above. Check back frequently as the fall workshop schedule firms up.
