LRC Gives a “TWEET” About Research This Fall, the Learning Resources Center (LRC) took the lead in making it easier to answer research and reference questions from students, faculty and staff by using social media (i.e. Twitter, Facebook) through a newly-created virtual librarian and by making a significant change on its website (http://lrc.tulsacc.edu). Kim Monday, an avatar or computer-generated being supported by actual LRC Librarians and Staff Members, can answer library and technical questions and distribute research tidbits using Facebook or MySpace. She can ―tweet‖ with LRC patrons using Twitter and ―chat‖ online with LRC patrons using AmericaOnLine (AOL), Google, Meebo, or Yahoo instant messaging. Also, the LRC can provide access to EBSCOHost (a large LRC multi-disciplinary electronic database with access to more than 18,500 journals and periodicals and more than 3.5 million research records) using smart phones like Blackberry, iPhone, or Palm 750. Lastly, subject guides have been added to the LRC website. Each guide is a one-stop research link to resources (periodicals, electronic databases, websites, RSS feeds) about a specific academic area (child development, political science, psychology)-compiled by LRC Librarians in conjunction with TCC faculty from the respective academic area. The LRC hopes to provide more than 50 subject guides within a two-year period. -Demetrius Bereolos TCC Distance Learning is featured in the national publication, Campus Technology!
