Important points:
• Make sure you know where your marriage or civil partnership will be taking place before giving notice
• If you are intending for your ceremony or formation to take place in an approved venue, a register office or a council ceremony room
outside your district of residence, you will need to have checked the availability of the venue and the registration service who will
attend at the ceremony before giving notice
• A fee is charged for the giving of notices and this fee is set by the Government. A complete list of fees and charges for Shropshire
Registration Service can be found by visiting www.shropshire.gov.uk
• For a marriage ceremony to be legal, certain words have to be said, however, where the ceremony is taking place at one of our approved
venues or council ceremony rooms, but not in a registrar’s office, it is possible to include personal vows or even have a bespoke
ceremony. For couples interested in this option please contact the Registration Service
• Couples where one or both parties are subject to immigration control have to give notice at a special register office called a
‘Designated Register Office’. A full list is available by visiting www.gov.uk. Couples not subject to immigration control should give
notice to the registrar for the district in which they live. Most registration offices will require that you make an appointment to give
notice. If you reside in the Shropshire Council area you may make an appointment to give notice of marriage by calling 0345 678 9016
or online by visiting www.shropshire.gov.uk
• If either party is under 18 years of age, consent may be required – please contact the Registration Service for clarification
• Notices have to be given in person – No one can give notice on behalf of any other person
• Any inclusion in a ceremony cannot be religious and inclusions are allowed at the discretion of the Superintendant Registrar who is
responsible for ensuring that you have a valid marriage or civil partnership.
