CEE HIGHLIGHTS
The U.Va. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Center for
Transportation Studies is leading the Mid-Atlantic Transportation Sustainability
University Transportation Center (MATS UTC), a consortium of six universities funded
by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Along with the long-time support of our state
partners, the Virginia Center for Transportation Innovation and Research, MATS UTC
has made possible groundbreaking work by Assistant Professor Devin K. Harris to
increase the resiliency of the U.S. transportation infrastructure.
Assistant Professor Osman Ozbulut recently secured a National Science Foundation
grant, Collaborative Research: Multi-Hazard Response Mitigation Systems Using High
Strength and Damping Capacity Shape Memory Alloys.
Associate Professor Andres Clarens’ program in the area of carbon sequestration
has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct a project focused
on developing coated wollastonite particles for targeted and stimuli responsive
carbonation for smart permeability control.
Associate Professor Lisa Colosi Peterson is demonstrating our department’s
commitment to knowledge creation with her research on integration of wastewater
treatment and large-scale algae-to-energy systems, aimed at improving the efficiency
and efficacy of wastewater treatments.
