Editors Karen Anderson Paul Keller www.cedarvalleydog.com Dog Cedar Valley Did you Know? By Karen Anderson ABCDT Dogs learn faster through silence rather than talking. Shhhhh when practicing your training skills. Just like on Charlie Brown the teacher sounded muffled; that’s how you sound to your dog. Dogs learn hand signals before understanding your words. Take a treat or a toy and lure your dog in the new behavior a little at a time. The exact moment your dog offers the new behavior say “good” boy/girl and follow with a yummy treat or game of fetch. Once your dog understands this new behavior then add the word (sit) say “good” boy/girl and follow with a yummy treat or game of fetch. Only practice up to 3 minutes at a time, several times throughout the day. Mission Statement To be the leading local resource for dog owners regarding regional events, health and wellness information, trends, style and lifestyle choices. We also strive being a mouth piece to the public for various dog related non-profits and promote pet adoption and responsible pet care practices. Recycle Adopt a Dog. By Karen Anderson ABCDT P et Parenting: The best way to let your pet know you are in charge of any situation is to remain calm. In humans, if you see a person of authority start to over react by yelling, smashing things or throwing things, you would wonder if this guy really has “it” together? Your dog thinks similarly. Why is dad or mom barking at me? What’s wrong? To be a good pet parent start by being calm, giving praise for all good behavior and setting realistic expectations for your dog.
