CASH FOR AP SCORES

Program expansion includes money , incentives for students .

Cedar Hill ISD high school students could receive up to $ 10,000 between the ninth and 12th grade for scores on advanced placement exams . AP classes are college-level courses , and most colleges and universities give college credit for high marks on AP exams . The tests are graded on a one to five scale , with five the highest score . The district will pay students who earn a three or higher $ 300 , $ 400 and $ 500 , respectively . Students take AP exams in May . Checks are sent once scores are received .

Paying students for AP scores is one part of the district ’ s AP program expansion . Cedar Hill High School Principal Michael McDonald says his team spoke to students and reviewed other AP programs . “ We ’ re expanding our AP class offerings ,” he says , “ increasing communication to students and parents , and removing the burden of cost by paying testing fees . This is generating more excitement about the program .”
In a survey , students said the AP program lacked prestige . As a result , CHHS created a student lounge and gave AP scholars special badge access .
Students say the changes will make an impact . “ I think it will push people to work harder ,” says senior Alaja Hobbs . Fellow 12th-grader Koi Webster agrees : “ I believe more people will join .”
