Nail Biting Performance is performed by Floyer
herself. It takes place before or between acts
in an auditorium of spectators who have come
to see the performance that was actually billed.
She enters the empty stage, approaches a
microphone and commences biting the nails
of each hand. The sound is conveyed over the
auditorium loudspeakers. When all fingernails
have been bitten, Floyer exits the stage.
The performance first took place on February 7,
2001, at the Symphony Hall of Birmingham,
where the orchestra performed Beethoven’s
Leonore Overture no. 2. Floyer’s Nail Biting
Performance took place during intermission and
was followed by the orchestra’s performance
of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

Die englische Redewendung »nail biting performance« bezeichnet eine besonders aufregende und mitreißende Veranstaltung. Floyer
führt ihre Nail Biting Performance immer selbst
auf. Sie findet vor einem Auditorium, vor oder
zwischen Teilen der Veranstaltung statt, zu der
das Publikum erschienen ist und für die es
bezahlt hat. Die Künstlerin tritt auf der leeren
Bühne an ein Mikrofon und beginnt damit,
nacheinander die Fingernägel beider Hände
abzubeißen. Das Geräusch wird über die Lautsprecheranlage in den Saal übertragen. Wenn
alle Fingernägel abgebissen sind, verlässt Floyer
die Bühne.
Diese Performance fand erstmals am 7. Februar
2001 in der Symphony Hall of Birmingham statt,
wo das Orchester an dem Abend Beethovens
Leonoren-Ouvertüre Nr. 2 aufführte. In der
Pause folgte die Nail Biting Performance, und
im Anschluss daran spielte das Orchester
Strawinskys Sacre du printemps.
