The CDU Office of International Affairs hosted an informational session on the Dominican Republic for university staff , students , and alumni . CDU ’ s Dominican Republic Medical Service-Learning trips occur twice a year , usually during January and March . The trips are organized and supported by Light a Candle and CDU ’ s Office of International Affairs .
Sandy Yan Meristal , Light a Candle founder , and his team were present during the session . “ When you guys are coming to the Dominican Republic , you ’ re not only going to learn , but you are also impacting the lives of others ,” shared Meristal .
During their time in the Dominican Republic , participants make daily treks through sugar cane fields to rural villages (“ bateys ”) and to semi-urban barrios in order to gain an understanding of local health disparities . The clinics offer the opportunity to reach those in medical need with important services . Additionally , the visit includes insightful cultural activities aimed to appreciate the diversity , history , and beauty of the Dominican Republic .
These excursions underscore the University ’ s commitment to fostering the “ Global- International Experience ” pillar of The CDU Advantage . The next trip will take place during the week of January 4-11 .
