College of Nursing Students Celebrate Diversity in Culmination Event

College of Nursing ’ s Cultural Diversity spring semester class led a cultural diversity culmination event , celebrating cultures from around the world through attire , food , and music .
“ We must recognize our unique challenges as minority nurses . Despite the growing diversity in nursing , we still need to overcome significant barriers to success ,” said Dr . Gail Washington , Dean of the College of Nursing . “ We must confront these challenges so that we can work to overcome them by creating a more inclusive and equitable profession .”
Students presented on Mexican American , African American , Jewish American and Filipino American cultures . The theme of the event was “ Life as we know it , the world as we once knew it … has changed . One thing that has not failed is human nature prevails over adversity .
” The event was emceed by students Paul Magante and Jeena Sharma . Attendees also heard from Sylvia Drew Ivie , CDU ’ s Special Assistant to the President
and CEO , as well as from Maria Williamson , Family Nurse Practitioner student of Cohort 33 .
“ It is an exciting time as we go forth into our designated communities and continue to uplift and help our people . Health is so important and when our patients see our collective faces , they will feel safer as inclusion matters ,” said Williamson . “ It is always encouraging to see someone who looks like you as you face health challenges and uncertainty about your future .”
