SHPEP Science Day Brings Future Med Students to Campus
Approximately 70 undergraduate students from across the country , mostly from underserved communities , who are considering attending medical school spent the day on the CDU campus learning and experiencing University programs and culture . The visit to CDU was part of the Summer Health Professions Education Program ( SHPEP ), a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions .
“ This program is a nationwide program and CDU partners with UCLA to host events over the summer for six weeks ,’’ shared Dulcie Kermah , Interim Executive Director of Pipeline Programs at CDU . “ The students are residential at UCLA and one day over the summer they come to CDU for this Science Day . We provide the students exposure to simulation activities and they also get to learn more about CDU graduate programs .”
Students had the opportunity to rotate through simulations in the CDU Simulation Center and experience a part of what actual CDU students encounter during their education . Students also received a tour of the campus and gathered in the Keck Lecture Hall where representatives from various University departments made presentations and fielded questions about attending CDU . Overall , the day provided a great opportunity for the next generation of medical students to meet professionals and interact with mentors who provided them more information about the steps to launch a career in health and medicine .
