President ’ s Message
Greetings ,
I warmly welcome you to the final edition of CDU News for 2023 . As we publish our last monthly digest of successes and activities , I find myself reflecting on the remarkable spirit and achievements of the CDU Community throughout the year .
It ’ s worth noting that this is the first year in several that was not dominated by COVID . Our campus has been open and in-person learning was in full effect which made our corner of South Los Angeles a lively place to be . I always enjoy being in the company of our amazing students , staff , and faculty .
In a year of notable challenges , including the Supreme Court ’ s stance on affirmative action affecting higher education nationwide , CDU has continued to excel in embracing and fostering diversity . Our long-standing adaptation to Prop 209 in California , which essentially ended affirmative action in our state back in 1996 , has equipped us to navigate these changes and stand as shining example to other colleges and universities . CDU reflects the rich diversity of the communities we serve , a testament to our commitment to health equity and our distinct position in the health professions education landscape .
For us , perhaps the largest landmark achievement this year was welcoming our inaugural cohort of 60 students into our MD program , a milestone that brings to life the vision of our founders . This step is not just about educating future doctors ; it ’ s a stride towards diversifying the healthcare workforce and addressing the needs of underserved communities .
As we stand at the threshold of a new year , let us carry with us the lessons and successes of 2023 . There is a palpable sense of hope and excitement about what lies ahead . Our focus on educational excellence and health equity is ongoing , and I am confident that together , we will achieve remarkable feats in the coming year . Here ’ s to a future bright with possibilities and rich with opportunities for growth .
