opportunity for guests to reflect on the progress made , honor the resilience of our black community , and look toward a future where HIV is no longer a barrier to health and equality .
“ This is a social justice issue , it will take policy change and programs addressing dismantling racism , discrimination , stigma , social economic and housing inequities ,” said Dr . LaShonda Spencer , Director , Drew CARES . “ We know that we can do this together , it will take a village , but it ’ s going to be this village in this room that ’ s going to end the epidemic .”
There was a Community Resource Fair following the program which offered complimentary lunch , free HIV testing services , free haircuts and braiding services , wellness swag bags , raffle prizes , and access to local community resources .

Classroom Named After Dr . Arthur Fleming

University

faculty ,
Surgery Residency Program .
and staff gathered in the Cobb building for a special unveiling ceremony of the newly named
Arthur W . Fleming , MD classroom .
Located in the recently renovated section of the Cobb Building , the classroom is used for lectures for students in CDU ’ s historic 4-Year
MD program .
Additionally , Dr . Fleming served as the first Trauma Director , a
Thoracic and Cardiovascular
Surgeon , and as
Chief of the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery .
He ’ s an Emeritus Professor of
Cardiovascular and
Thoracic
Surgery at CDU and sits on the
Dr .
Fleming
has
made
an
Charles R . Drew Medical Society
indelible impact on the University throughout his decades of service .
He ’ s committed to helping others achieve their goals and lives by the motto , “ To whom much is given , much is expected .”
Dr . Fleming served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at CDU and Program Director of the
Board of Directors .
The naming of the Arthur W .
Fleming , MD classroom marks an exciting moment for COM as it continues to blaze trails as the
157th medical degree program in the U . S . and stands as one of only four MD programs offered at a historically black medical school .
