President ’ s Message
Greetings ,
I just a few hours ago stepped away from the podium after delivering the 2022 State of the University address . Thank you to everyone who attended , participated in , or supported the event . You will have a chance to read about that more in next month ’ s issue of this newsletter .
Each State of the University address is an opportunity to recall and reflect on all that has been accomplished in the prior academic year , with a little bit of a look forward to the coming year and beyond . What struck me the most after the event was how extra excited I already was about what is next in CDU ’ s story . There is so much going on that I could probably get a running start on writing the 2023 State of the University speech today .
First and foremost is the amazing progress we are making in our historic effort to create a 4-year CDU medical degree program . The proposed program is being built from the ground up with the University ’ s vision of a world without health disparities inexorably infused into its very structure . Quite frankly we are aiming for nothing short of being the nation ’ s preeminent mission-driven MD program .
We have not been idle while eagerly awaiting word back from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education , the body that provides accreditation to medical education programs leading to the MD degree in the United States . We celebrated the opening of the APLA Health Center in the newest building on our campus . We welcomed Congresswomen Nanette Barragán for a special presentation related to our ongoing research . We even announced which students are heading to clinical rotations with the world-champion Los Angeles Rams .
It was also great to welcome a cohort of 25 Mandela Washington Fellows from Africa to spend some time at CDU and provide the opportunity for them to meet with staff , students , and faculty . Meanwhile , CDU had a notable presence in Tampa , Florida , and Atlanta , Georgia , for various conferences .
You can read about these and other recent accomplishments in this edition of CDU News and , probably , hear about them again when I deliver next year ’ s State of the University . We are always on the move in the pursuit of providing excellent education , creating workforce diversity in the health / medical professions , and shaping future leaders in their field . Thanks to this , and to all of you in the extended CDU community who are on the move with us , I never have a shortage of great things to talk about when discussing our University .
Sincerely ,
Dr . David M . Carlisle , MD , PhD . President and CEO
