CDU Celebrates Heritage and Unity with Divine Nine Tribute During Black History Month
During Black History month , a special celebration was hosted on campus in honor of the Divine Nine organizations : Alpha Kappa Alpha , Kappa Alpha Psi , Omega Psi Phi , Delta Sigma Theta , Zeta Phi Beta , Alpha Phi Alpha , Phi Beta Sigma , Sigma Gamma Rho , and Iota Phi Theta .
The event was held in the LSRNE courtyard and foyer and served as a powerful expression of culture , heritage , and solidarity .
“ I noticed that we have a lot of people on campus who are a part of D9 organizations , but they were very lowkey ,” said Selom Gbewonyo , event host and student in the inaugural CDU 4-Year MD program . “ I thought since we ’ re the first and only HBGI on the West Coast , we have to act like it , especially with the history .”
The Divine Nine is the nickname given to the nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations and they occupy a significant place in Black American history and culture .
“ Our namesake , Dr . Charles R . Drew was a man of Omega Psi Phi . I think that ’ s very important ; I think that ’ s Black History and it deserves to be celebrated ,” said Gbewonyo . “ An event like this allows us to talk to the undergraduates who want to get involved and maybe bring something bigger to campus overall .”
The special event provided an opportunity to amplify the presence of the organizations on campus , as representatives from each organization provided information to students interested in joining the sisterhood and brotherhood .
The celebration showcased campus unity on campus students from various colleges and programs , faculty , and staff convened to celebrate and represent their organizations .
Adrienne Milbourne-Thompson , CDU Academic Support Specialist was proud to be part of the event and was one of the Alpha Kappa Alpha table representatives .
