CDU Awarded $ 2 Million Grant From The National Institutes of Health
CDU has been awarded a $ 2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health ( NIH ).
The grant , titled “ Charles R . Drew University of Medicine and Science Research Endowment Program ,” will support efforts to expand the Urban Health Institute ( UHI ), expand master ’ s degree programs in the University ’ s College of Science and Health ( COSH ), and enhance diversity of the scientific workforce .
“ We are thrilled to receive this generous grant from the NIH ,” said Dr . David M . Carlisle , CDU President and CEO , who serves as the principal investigator for the grant . “ This significant investment will empower us to further our commitment to reducing health disparities , advancing health services research , and fostering diversity in the scientific community .”
The funds from this grant will support various components , specifically faculty and staff salaries , bioinformatics and biostatistics software , scientific writing , publication fees , and post-doctoral / bridge funding for the period of June 2023 through May 2024 .
The potential positive outcome of this grant is the increased diversity of the scientific workforce engaged in minority health and health disparity research at CDU and its surrounding community .
“ CDU proposes to build upon successes funded since 2006 through previous NIMHD endowment-generated income ,” said Caroline Farodolu , Interim Director , Urban Health Institute . “ Specifically , CDU plans to ex tend and expand its health services , community-engaged , and biomedical research capacity and infrastructure within the NIMHD-Endowed Urban Health Institute by creating a Learning Health Systems and Learning Health Communities ( LHSC ) Core .”
This award adds to the University ’ s academic mission of education , research , clinical service , and community engagement through assisting in their efforts of helping reduce health disparities , fostering diversity in the scientific community , and expanding research initiatives .
