Dr . Adrienne Mims , MD , MPH , FAAFP , AGSF , ' 84
Adrienne Mims , MD , MPH , FAAFP , AGSF , ' 84 is an alumna of the Family Medicine Residency program at Martin Luther King / Charles Drew Medical Center . Mims is currently the Chief Medical Officer ( CMO ) at Rainmmakers Strategic Solutions LLC , where she collaborates with members of its various teams of professionals to expand Rainmakers ’ excellent health care industry reputation for thought leadership and involvement in the development and execution of key health care quality improvement initiatives and contracts , on diverse topics such as health equity , patient advocacy , value-based payments , and the COVID pandemic .
Mims joined CDU during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and describes her time at CDU as a deep immersion learning experience . " I thrived in the environment of people who looked like me and treated me like I was supposed to be there ," said Mims . " It was full of meeting new colleagues and interacting with encouraging attendings and upper-level residents . The place had no shortage of patients with early to advanced diseases of every specialty to learn about pathology , and treatment ."
Her interest in medicine began as a child in the 1960s where she witnessed the segregation and lack of services available in her witnessed the segregation and lack of services available in her Washington D . C . community . " My grandmother and I frequented the only physician in the community who had a basic two room office where he treated all age groups . It did not include diagnostic testing ," shared Mims . " When my grandmother died in 1974 from cervical cancer , having never had a pap smear , I decided that I wanted to become a family medicine physician to elevate the level of care in my community ."
Mims is board certified in family medicine and geriatrics , with fellowship status in both specialties . As a clinical epidemiologist , she has more than 30 years of administrative experience in using quality performance metrics to guide changes in clinical processes and delivery system redesign to improve health equity for populations served .
The message she sends to current and future medical students is to recognize the gift and honor of being able to provide high quality care to under-resourced communities . " Each patient encounter is a golden learning experience that you should relish and take full advantage of while you have teachers to provide feedback ," explains Mims . " While the work is hard , that effort pays back in dividends when you are alone in the future and it is only you making the decisions ."
