SON Hosts Virtual Cultural Culmination

School of Nursing ’ s ( SON ) NUR 642 spring semester class led a virtual cultural culmination event , celebrating cultures from around the world . The theme of the program , chosen by the class , was : “ Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common … Celebrate it every day .”
“ This program was a great way to come together as a community and celebrate diversity ,” said Nancy Diago , SON Assistant Professor . “ Students conducted thorough research to accurately showcase these wonderful cultures and emphasize the importance of diversity .”
The event heard opening remarks from Jim Liang , Family Nurse Practitioner ( FNP ) Cohort 30 President , and an inspirational message from Sylvia Drew Ivie , Special Assistant to the President for Community Relations .
SON students presented on four ethnic groups : Japanese , African American , Jewish American , and Hispanic . The cultural culmination came to a close with remarks from Paris Obike , Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Cohort 9 President .
“ It is a wonderful event to witness ,” said Georgia Delgado , Family Nurse Practitioner Program Coordinator . “ I personally appreciate when students take the time to do their research to best represent these cultures in a fun , respectful , and educational way .”

SON Welcomes Students to New Programs

The School of Nursing welcomed the inaugural cohorts for the Doctors of Nursing Practice Program ( DNP ), as well as the opening of the three-year Pre Licensure Bachelor of Science ( BSN ) in Nursing Program .
The DNP Program , which is the first doctoral degree program offered at CDU , admitted nine students to its inaugural Cohort 1 . The leadership-focused DNP Program prepares advanced practice nurses to manage the care of individuals and families across the lifespan . Graduates of this program will be eligible to be leaders in fields of nursing practice and nursing education .
“ Our DNP program at CDU prepares nurse leaders to meet the call for the Institutes of Medicine and the American Nurses Association to advance the nursing profession ,” said Dr . Juana Ferrerosa , Director of Doctor Nursing Practice ( DNP ) Program “ The work of our DNP students showcases the school of nursing ’ s vision of excellent nursing care for all in a world without health disparities ..”
The BSN Prelicensure / Generic Track ( Prelicensure BSN ) program also welcomed their first cohort in Spring 2022 . The inaugural cohort reflects the university ’ s commitment to diversity , with 64 % identifying as African American and 20 % identifying as Latinx . Additionally , over 68 % identify as a first generation college student .
“ As the director , I am elated to have welcomed so many individuals to our BSN program thus far . I have encountered persons from diverse backgrounds , who were seeking a nursing program that is committed to their success and shows care to them .,” said Dr . Sharon Cobb , Director , Prelicensure Nursing Programs . “ With both the state of California and our nation experiencing a major nursing shortage , we are meeting healthcare workforce needs by contributing diverse nurse leaders , especially for service in critical health professional shortage areas .”
Offering this BSN Program at CDU achieves the goals and visions of the CDU Advantage , a unique curricular experience that differentiates the University ’ s education . The BSN program provides opportunities for graduates of local high schools and community colleges to earn bachelor ’ s degrees within our local catchment community of South Los Angeles , as well as increases the number of professional nurses in the area .
