CDU Hosts 8th Annual DHS Diabetes Day Event

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services ( DHS ) came to the CDU campus in December 2021 to mark the 8th annual DHS Diabetes Day with a special event . The event offered students and healthcare professionals along with patients and families with diabetes the opportunity to learn more about the disease . The 8th Annual DHS Diabetes Day event featured guest speakers , information booths , and demonstrations of blood testing technology .
The event took place in front of the Keck building with guest speakers making presentations in Keck Lecture Hall either virtually or in person , with all presentations being streamed for remote attendees . Carol M . Mangione , Division Chief of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research at UCLA was the keynote speaker . She was joined by other speakers , including Ralph A . DeFronzo , Chair in Diabetes in the Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio ; Anne Peters , Director of the USC Clinical Diabetes Programs . and Daniel Einhorn , medical director of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute .
“ All of us in this country are more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than anything else ,” said Peters , framing the human cost of the disease . “ BMI and fasting glucose are two things we have the power to change ,” she added , highlighting steps we can all take to limit the prevalence and impact of diabetes .”
DeFronzo spoke about insulin resistance and how it relates to diabetes care , followed up by Einhorn ’ s discussion about having a better diabetes clinic visit . “ Take that moment and help the person in front of you . Feel like you understand them … that you ' re taking a little moment to take them in as a person ,” urged Einhorn .
Other topics addressed at the event included how to improve diabetes care among the underserved , Mediterranean diet for patients with diabetes , and how to talk to your doctor about diabetes . Attendees even took an exercise break in the middle of the day , which served to highlight the important role that physical activity plays in preventing and managing diabetes .
