Local High School Students Conduct Research at CDU

CDU opened its doors to local high school students for two days innovative summer programs aimed at addressing health disparities and fostering a new generation of scientists and researchers.
The Exposing Students to Regenerative Medicine( ExStRM) Program engages qualified high school students in South Los Angeles in world-class regenerative medicine research.
10 students received hands-on mentored training in health areas such as sickle cell disease, cancer, and diabetes.
Meanwhile, Project STRIDE( Students Training in Research Involving Disparity Elimination) is a 10-week summer clinical research program for 11th-grade students, also involving 10 local high school students. Project STRIDE focuses on biomedical research and health sciences, providing participants with a comprehensive immersion experience.

CDU Hosts SHPEP Science Day

CDU welcomed approximately 75 undergraduate students from across the nation to its campus for an exciting and informative Summer Health Professions Education Program Science Day event.
The day aimed to provide students, particularly those from underserved communities, with valuable exposure to the world of healthcare and opportunities in the medical field.

Community Forum Highlights LGBTQ + Voices

The October CDU Community Forum, moderated by Sylvia Drew Ivie, CDU Special Assistant to the President for External Affairs and daughter of Dr. Charles R. Drew underscored“ LGBTQIA + Voices in the Community.”
Dr. David M. Carlisle, President of CDU, was joined by Cynthia Davis, Assistant Professor of Urban Public Health at CDU; Alexandra Magallon, Coordinator of Policy and Community Engagement for TransLatin @ Coalition; and Juan Carlos Ruiz Malagon, Doctoral Student in Public Health at UC Irvine.
The discussion highlighted the challenges faced by LGBTQIA + communities, more specifically the health disparities, the intersection of gender identity and ethnicity, the youth population, and advocacy groups.

CDU Observes World AIDS Day

CDU observed World AIDS Day 2023 with two celebratory events held on campus.
The first event held on December 1, the official World AIDS day, was hosted by the Drew Center for AIDS Research, Education, and Services( Drew CARES). This marked their 3rd student-run World AIDS Day event and featured resource tables, rapid HIV testing, a paint station, and games.
A separate event,“ 2023 World AIDS Day 35th Anniversary Commemorative Event,” was held on December 6 on campus hosted by LA County Supervisorial District 2, the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV Black Caucus, Charles R. Drew University, and Drew CARES.
