CCS Athletics Athletic Team Protocol for Building Teams FINAL | Page 3

The Cornerstone Christian School Athletic Team Protocol for Building CCS Varsity Basketball The following defines CCS’s varsity basketball teams: 1) CCS students in Grades 9-12 are invited to register to participate on our varsity basketball teams. When the student interest level in any given year is lower than 10 players, then registration may be opened to Grade 8. In rare cases, when interest level is significantly low, registration may be opened to Grade 7 but would not be extended to students in Grade 6. 2) CCS has a girls’ varsity basketball team and a boys’ varsity basketball team that is designed for competition against other high school teams. 3) Homeschool students in Grades 8-12 are permitted to register to participate on our athletic teams when vacancies exist. (See #1 for exceptions when significantly low student interest exists.) CCS does not bolster its athletic teams by taking homeschoolers onto its teams. Instead, CCS provides opportunities to homeschoolers to participate when space is available. (Pay-to-play fees will be returned when there are no vacancies and/or when a student is deemed by the Screening Team as a safety risk.) The following guidelines, in sequential order, are to be used when students register to participate on our varsity basketball teams: 1) Students who register will be evaluated for eligibility to play based on safety risks to the student while participating in a varsity-level game on the court. a. Specific consideration will be given to the risks posed by playing against high school teams. b. Students will be evaluated on their physical limitations and their awareness/concentration skills, both of which are necessary to reduce the risk of injury to the student and to others. c. Those who are deemed by the Screening Team (the Athletic Director, CCS Chaplain and MCN Pastor, or his designee) as potential safety risks will be declared ineligible for that year and will not be allowed to play on the CCS varsity basketball teams. Pay-to-play fees will be refunded in full when the school must make this decision. d. The coach may extend the privilege of being a manager to a few ineligible students, thus allowing them to participate in certain sections of the practices. These students would not likely travel with the team to away games, but neither would they pay the participation fees. 2) Each varsity basketball team will be comprised of 12-14 team members (with 12 being ideal).
