Chair’s Message
Dr. Teng Ma
Welcome to the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Please take time to explore
our newly updated research brochure and website to discover all the
exciting education and research activities in the department.
Over the last decade, the department has experienced rapid growth
in both educational and research. The department has a dynamic and
active faculty of 16, whose work is clustered in the areas of chemical
engineering, materials science and engineering, and biomedical
engineering. Specific research programs cover areas such as molecular
transport, systems and computational biology, cellular and tissue
engineering, polymers, advanced NMR imaging, nanostructured
materials, and energy. Our research programs in these areas are
vibrant, interdisciplinary, and poised to make important contributions
to key issues facing society. As an indication of the currency and
relevance of our research programs, our department is currently
engaged in five of the fourteen Grant Challenges for Engineering put
forth by the National Academy of Engineering.
We strive to
educate our
students in core
fundamentals
and engage
students with
emerging
technologies.
Our department welcomes two new faculty members, Drs. Hoyong
Chung and Jose Mendoza-Cortes, in the 2014-2015 academic year.
Both Hoyong and Jose are among the recent university-wide strategic
hires in energy and materials. In Fall 2013, Dr. Biwu Ma, a new Associate
Professor, joined through the same strategic hiring initiative. These
outstanding scholars will greatly strengthen our materials research
program.
I am pleased to congratulate Professor Rufina Alamo, the Simon Ostrach
Professor of Engineering, on her appointment as an FSU Distinguished
Research Professor. Congratulations also go to Professors Anant
Paravastu and Jingjiao Guan on their promotion to Associate Professor
with tenure. Following his National Science Foundation Career Award,
Professor Paravastu was recently awarded a coveted NIH R01 award
for his study on the structure of the Alzheimer’s beta-amyloid protein,
a key protein to understand and to find cures for the Alzheimer’s
disease. Professor Jingjiao Guan was recently awarded a National
Science Foundation grant to study the integration of polyelectrolyte
contact printing for nano-patterning.
I hope you will explore our programs and continue to support our
program. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] .
