Seal Repair
You will not be able to make any move if you know nothing about identifying a failed
window seal. Therefore, it is important to educate yourself about different stages of
failed window seals to make timely moves. The problem is that a seal will not break
suddenly and there will be subtle signs telling you that your window needs attention. For
instance, when your window seal initially fails, you usually notice no change in the glass
whatsoever. In other words, you may never find any visible evidence of a broken or
failed seal.
The reason is that there is usually a desiccant around the window unit keeping moisture
from accumulating in the space between the pieces of glass. As long as the desiccant is
intact, you will not observe any fog on the glass. In the absence of any moisture
between the two layers of glass, there is usually no way to tell that the seal is broken.
However, the things will change over time and the next stage of a broken seal is to find
condensation on the glass. The condensation is the result of moist air accumulating in
the space between the pieces of glass. Keep in mind that even when there is moisture
between the pieces of glass you may not notice any condensation until there is a
fluctuation in the room temperature. Any rapid change in temperature will make you
notice the first sign of a failed seal in the form of condensation.
