“ I know what you ’ re thinking , Kenna . But honestly , just stop soaking in guilt . It has eaten you whole and I can ’ t take it anymore .”
“ The fact that we ’ re having this discussion at 3 am in a random hotel in the middle of nowhere justifies my unease , no ?”
“ Logistics do not matter . And beyond a point , nor does your sanctimony .” “ We are allowed to behave like savages then ?”
“ You don ’ t have to be so dramatic . I ’ m just saying right and wrong are subjective . Maybe humans were never meant to be monogamous to begin with .”
“ It ’ s unfair to make exceptions for ourselves when we ’ re so rabidly judgmental about the rights and wrongs of other people .”
“ What other people ? What judgment ?”
“ You always scold people who litter the streets . You buy only eco-friendly clothes . You hate plastic and all your employees must carpool their way to office . You look down upon those who refuse to do these things . Isn ’ t that about morality too ?”
“ Yes , it is . But that is different . We all owe that much to the planet . Refusing to acknowledge the pollution crisis is plain denial .”
“ But what we ’ re doing right now is denial too , Deb . Morality applies everywhere , whether it is about the planet or the people we married .”
“ You need to let go . For your own sake .” “ I can ’ t play blind . It kills me .” “ What do you want to do then ? What choice do we have ?” And the answer to that question , as always , is that I do not know .
Silence takes over again . We ’ re used to this – we love each other so hopelessly that we ’ re unwilling to let the Standard Operating Procedures of modern civilization interfere with our union . Then again , there were responsibilities we willingly took on once upon a time , so there are people we are answerable to now .
