Cataracts and Eye LASIK Surgery
What is Cataract?
Cataract is one of the most common visual inadequacies in which the eye lens becomes
cloudy causing hazy and blurry vision. Cataract is estimated to cause half of the blindness
and accounts for about 33% cases of visual impairment throughout the globe. They often
occur due to aging (Age-related Cataract) but other factors may also be responsible.
Cataract is known as Congenital if it is present from birth, Secondary if occurs as a result
of another medical condition like diabetes and Traumatic if it results due to an injury to
the eye.
Can I opt LASIK surgery if I have cataracts?
Eye LASIK surgery is an advanced and highly proficient method performed for the
correction of eyesight problems viz., Nearsightedness, Farsightedness, and Astigmatism.
The procedure of LASIK Surgery involves reshaping the surface of the cornea to correct
the vision problems. As cataract occurs due the development of cloudiness in the lens,
LASIK surgery cannot correct the vision loss due to cataracts. Also, LASIK is not
recommended if a patient is suffering from cataract as the condition worsens over time
and often require cataract surgery.
LASIK Surgery could be given the green signal to a person with cataract in exceptional
cases like in the case of small congenital cataract which is stable and doesn't cause any
significant effect on the person's vision. In addition to this, other parameters which make
a candidate suitable for the surgery should also be carefully considered.
Can LASIK be performed after Cataract Surgery?
LASIK Surgery can be performed after a person has undergone the cataract surgery. An
eye surgeon may also correct the refractive errors during the cataract surgery itself with
additional costs but, it is not as effective and accurate as LASIK surgery. LASIK is more
advanced and more proficient method of correcting refractive errors. Thus, opting noninvasive LASIK treatment after cataract surgery is a good option to correct the refractive
errors. In fact, LASIK is performed to fine tune the residual refractive errors after
cataract surgery.
