Make sure your ladder is positioned securely If you have a stable base , you can work safely . You must only get on the ladder once you are sure that it is stable and secure . But how can you be sure ? There are a number of things you can check .
Before you ascend the ladder , check its angle . An angle of 75 degrees is best . You can easily check this by placing the toe of your shoe against the foot of the ladder and then stretching your arms out in front of you . If you can easily grab the ladder , then the angle is fine . Make sure that the rungs are horizontal . Do you have a self-locking spreading protection on your ladder ? If so , use it when the ladder is in the A-position and lock it .
The surface under the ladder is also very important . It must be flat and sturdy . You don ’ t want the ladder to sink or move . So never place a ladder on loose boards , crates or soil . You can also reinforce the surface with patio slabs or a special ladder mat .
