“Sex and Bacon” review
by gloria diaz
Sex and bacon. Bacon and sex. They’ve
both been around for a long time, and if
you indulge in them, they can kill you.
Especially if you have unprotected sex.
But the author, Sarah Katherine Lewis,
doesn’t much care. She is a former sex
worker who has written a book about that
(Indecent: How I Make it and Fake it as a
Girl for Hire) but in Sex and Bacon: Why I
love Things that are Very, Very Bad for Me,
there are a lot of yummy-sounding recipes
and some truly bizarre stories about being
a sex worker.
It’s not just about bacon. Or sex. She talks
about how to make fried chicken (I’ll have
to try it because it DOES sound good) and
eating whale. (She feels a bit guilty about
it too, so don’t send her nasty emails.) She
also talks about writing a personal ad
and finally finding someone for her. She
points out the irony: “I could sell access
to my vagina, but I couldn’t give it away
for free.” After two weeks of disappointing
messages, “Mick,” a very slender female,
comes through for the bisexual Sarah.
