“ My mom would never let us move in with her sister if she looked like Sam,” Ryan said as they climbed into Eddie’ s truck.“ She is my cousin. The kid’ s refer to her as Aunt Samantha out of respect. She and I are pretty close,” Eddie said, figuring Justin had not gone into much detail about Sam’ s family relationship. Dropping Ryan at at his house, Eddie could feel his son’ s stare.“ What?”“ Why did you lie to Ryan?” Justin asked.“ Because Sam doesn’ t look like me or your mom. I really don’ t want to answer a bunch of stupid questions.”“ I just wanted to understand why,” Justin said quietly from the passenger seat.“ It wasn’ t your question to which I was referring. It was the questions that would follow his statement.”“ Sam having a baby might bring a whole bunch of questions,” Justin said.“ I know what is going on. I know Ms. Jorgensen had my baby sister and Sam wants a baby. I know about Mom and Sam’ s relationship and she wants Sam to have your baby,” Justin said.
“” I guess it’ s time we had that father son talk,” Eddie said, pulling into the driveway.“ You mean the discussion about sex? What exactly did you want to know. Maybe I need explain when you put your penis into a vagina and move it in and out, the stuff that squirts out is called semen and makes babies. Oral sex and anal sex does not produce offspring.”“ Are you having sex?” Eddie asked.“ No, but thanks for the father, son talk,” Justin said, getting out and heading for the house. Eddie leaned his head against the steering wheel angry with himself for not knowing when to have that talk. Eddie’ s father’ s discussion consisted of asking if he knew about sex. The answer,“ Sex makes babies,” was only a phrase he could repeat. It was enough for his father to conclude his son knew about sex. Eddie found out what sex was about three months later on his fourteenth birthday. A neighbor girl wanted to make his birthday memorable. It was a present he never forgot and wished he had never accepted. She was at least smart enough to provide a condom.
Inside Nicole’ s room, Justin told her about the“ cousin” statement. Nicole questioned as to whether Ryan had a girlfriend.“ Why do you care?” he asked, still in a foul mood. Nicole explained her plan to have a small party at Sam’ s place. An intimate party of eight would be a nice warm up for the spring break party she was already planning.“ You, me and Stephie have dates. Ryan needs one.” Justin perked up considerably and explained Ryan was pretty shy around girls, but he was pretty cool around Sam.“ Let me see who might be interested in going out with Ryan,” she said and headed to her room to call Sam.
“ It’ s probably going to be the last nice weekend of the year!” Sam exclaimed after hearing Nicole’ s request.“ Eight teenagers I think I can handle. How about we start off with a day of racing?” Sam asked as if reading Nicole’ s thoughts. Now all Nicole had to do was ask her parents, starting with Daddy.
