MEASUREMENT & CONTROL | 23 w w w. n e w b u s i n e s s m e d i a . c o Industrial 3D metrology in casting process chains Optical metrology accelerates pattern and tool making, mould and core making, as well as FAI and CNC machining. In casting processes, 3D measuring technology accelerates all stages in sand casting, pressure diecasting and investment casting; from pattern and tool making, moulding shop and core making up to first article inspection reports and CNC machining optimisation. The optical 3D coordinate measuring system ATOS is GOM’s response to increased demands in industrial production. ATOS enables full-field and non-contact measuring of models, tools, dies, sand cores, sand moulds and cast parts, regardless of part size. The full surface measuring results guarantee a faster first article inspection, as well as a targeted tool modification and thus shorten production ramp-up times. In series-accompanying quality assurance, all measuring and inspection workflows up to inspection reports run completely automated with the 3D measuring cell ATOS ScanBox. By automating the entire measuring and inspection process, including reporting, ATOS ScanBoxes can be operated directly by production staff. This is realised by the standard software Virtual Measuring Room (VMR), which simulates the real measuring cell environment, including component and robot kinematics. The robot can be controlled directly in
