What action is taking place in the cartoon? What is the context?
When the government shut down, it shut down all of its government funded programs as well. One of them was WIC which stands for women, infants, and children. “ Over 8.9 million moms and kids under five living near or below the poverty line rely on the program’s supplemental vouchers for healthy food, breastfeeding support, infant formula and other necessities dispensed at clinics nationwide.” (Connor, Forbes)
Which side is supported by the framing of the cartoon?
The cartoonist clearly shows us that he is leaning towards the left side by how he draws the elephant. The elephant is dressed up in a nice suit and tie and clearly represents the republican party, mostly those who are a big part of the shutdown.
What evidence can you give that shows the cartoonist supports one side or the other?
The cartoonist shows us his conservative side by the way he drew/draws the elephant. The Elephant which represents the republican party is dressed like a politician. It has on a nice blue suit, red tie, and looks very powerful.
Stuart Carlson draws the elephant the same way in the other cartoons he draws as well which gives more clear evidence on his feelings towards the republican party; powerful, not a care in the world for others, and
What “reality” is constructed/framed about your issue?
The “reality” that Carlson demonstrates to us is the way he depicts the republican party in this cartoon. The elephant says, “ This government “slimdown” is just a TACTIC. It’s not like it hurts real people” as its taking the bottle away from the baby in the stroller.
