The 2,400-mile journey across state borders will not be the only challenge they’ll have to face, as the students are also expected to navigate the journey using old-school methods. They will not be allowed to use their cell phones during the trip and will not have the luxury of using any GPS devices or road maps to complete the trip.
The road tour, dubbed the "Great Race" will begin in Jacksonville, Florida on June 20 and will go through the Dixie Highway for roughly nine days where the contestants will conclude their trip in Traverse City, Michigan.
Apart from the six West Michigan teenagers, 120 other teams from around the United States will compete in this vintage car rally where they will have to navigate using only turn-by-turn written instructions, which will even have details such as the number of seconds they should wait at a stop sign. However, the teens will be allowed to use stopwatches and pencils to help them traverse the journey.
The winners of this rally are expected to be rewarded with a $250,000 cash prize.
A 2,400-Mile Vintage Car Race: School Kids take it Old School
Six teenagers from the US state of Michigan are expected to go on an epic road trip in June, in an antique car that they personally helped to restore.
The Gilmore Car Museum’s Garage Works, which is an after school program that helps students to restore and maintain vintage vehicles, supported their effort to restore a 1935 Packard car.
