Things have gotten pretty quiet in the last few months. The car market is recovering slowly, but that’s mainly because people have gone bananas over the Renault Kwid (a craze that seems to be dying down). Everyone is waiting to see what the budget will bring, and trying to deal with all the increase cost of everything, and of course VAT.

I was sitting in traffic the other day wondering why are we going through all this when a bus flew by me, on the wrong side of the road (they are over there so much, maybe we are on the wrong side of the road?). Then I got to thinking, honestly, if the bus system here was better, I wouldn’t drive to work everyday. I don’t think most people would. As the cogs started turning in my head, I thought, technically, upgrading the public transport system would help the country’s economy. Fewer people driving means demand for fuel will reduce, and fuel imports will go down. Fuel imports going down means our Forex reserves and balance of payments get healthier. Less traffic on the roads (and better buses/trains) means increased efficiency, people get places on time, get more done, people are happier. You reduce emissions and noise pollution.

We don’t need fancy monorails and what not, keep a strict set of regulations regarding road worthiness of public transport

vehicles and the operations. Have those working in that industry required to undergo

training and ensure swift action against the owners. While the bus driver might be the one driving like a lunatic, if the owner gets a large penalty, it won’t take long for them to make sure the drivers adhere to road laws/etiquette.
