Caring magazine 48 Caring April 2018 | Page 3
Welcome
In this edition of Caring we are looking
at those of us who juggle work and
care, some of the challenges and the
positives this can bring.
It’s our firm belief at Carers
UK that no one should have
to give up work to care.
We are, therefore, always
looking at ways to support
employers to become carer
friendly organisations and to
have policies and practices
which support people in
their workplaces who have
caring responsibilities.
In our lead feature (pg6), we
meet Scott, who explains
how he was “petrified” he
might have to give up work
to care for his daughter
Amber who has cystic
fibrosis. It made me proud
to read that, with the
support of the organisation
he works for, he can now
feel more confident as a
carer in the workplace and
is lending his support to
colleagues who are carers.
Why proud? Well, his
employer, the Financial
Ombudsman Service, is a
member of our Employers
for Carers network. The
network has been growing
Our mission is to make
life better for carers:
over the past few years,
with over 100 members
who we are helping to be
organisations who value
and support their carer
employees. If you are
a working carer, please
encourage your employer
to join the network – or
in Scotland, join our Carer
Positive initiative.
It’s not just working carers
we support at Carers UK:
our commitment is to be
there for people with all
kinds of caring experiences.
To help us to do this, our
Board of Trustees contains
a majority of people who
are, or recently have been,
carers. We’re now in the
process of looking for new
Trustees to join our board
(pg11). If you have the
skills and experience and
commitment to take on this
important role, we’d love to
hear from you.
